As impressive as Bo Nix has looked at times, he’s had his fair share of rookie lowlights. Sean Payton has done his best to minimize his young signal caller’s lowlights. Nix is averaging 3.8 air yards per attempt, which is 42nd among quarterbacks who’ve thrown a pass this year. This offense is predicated on screens and quick hitters to minimize Nix’s decision-making. That style of play can work against inferior competition, which is why he had such a long streak protecting the football.
Denver leaned on Nix more over the last six weeks, and that ball protection went south. He had six interceptions and a pair of fumbles in that span, consistently putting the ball in harm’s way. Nix is on the road in front of a raucous Buffalo crowd against one of the league’s best defenses. Rookies consistently wilt in the playoffs, and it’s hard to imagine Nix bucks the trend. The Bills have a pair of ball-tracking boundary corners, and Nix will eventually get overzealous and toss an ill-advised pick.
