The Knicks picked up a win over the Raptors on Wednesday night to break their three-game losing skid that they went on to start the new year. Now on Friday night, they have the chance for revenge against the Thunder. They played Oklahoma City on the road exactly a week ago in their first game of 2025. That game against the Thunder was the Knicks’ chance to extend their winning streak to ten games and prove to the world that they are the real deal by knocking off the Western Conference’s top team on the road. The Knicks looked great through three quarters but were outmatched in the fourth quarter. They lost that game and that started the three-game losing streak that they went on. Seven days later, they have the chance to redeem that loss and prove once again that they are contenders.
Karl-Anthony Towns is questionable for this game against the Thunder. He has been dealing with a minor knee injury that kept him out of Monday’s loss to Orlando. However, he did return and play on Wednesday night in the win over the Raptors. It appears that this could be a lingering injury for Towns over the next couple of weeks and he will play whenever he feels fit. Despite the injury, he played 34 minutes and scored 27 points so he seemed good when he was on the court. Towns has become integral to this Knicks’ offense alongside Jalen Brunson. The Knicks have only lost five games since the start of December and Towns was out for two of those five games. The Knicks will struggle to beat a team like the Thunder if Towns can’t play.
Whether Towns is on the court or not, Jalen Brunson needs to play much better if the Knicks want to beat Oklahoma City this time. Brunson shot 9/23 from the floor in last week’s matchup with OKC and struggled to operate the offense against one of the NBA’s best defenses. More specifically, Brunson went 0/5 from beyond the arc. It’s still very early, but Brunson is shooting 14.3% from three so far in January. Strangely, he has also shot much worse at home this season. This season, he is shooting 32.6% from three at home, compared to 42.7% on the road. This could just be a coincidence but it’s possible Brunson actually feels more pressure to hit the big shot in front of his home crowd and is more relaxed on the road. Given his home/away splits, his shooting percentage so far this month and the really tough defensive matchup against the Thunder, I am betting on Brunson to make under 1.5 3-pointers on Friday night. Especially if Towns doesn’t go, Brunson will get a ton of defensive attention from an elite defense and they will make it really hard for him to get any open looks. Brunson has only made more than one three-pointer in one of his past nine games and I am backing him to go under that number again.
