UPDATE: As of January 8, Rooker’s extension is now official.
In what feels like a massive bargain, OF Brent Rooker has agreed to a five-year, $60 million extension to remain with the Athletics, per Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. Rosenthal also notes that this can turn into a six-year, $90 million deal due to a vesting option.
Rooker is no spring chicken, as he just turned 30 in November. However, he’s coming off a massive breakout campaign in 2024, smashing 39 home runs with a 164 wRC+ and .392 wOBA in 145 games. Rooker was set to earn $3.5M in 2025, and was under contract until 2028. This extension will now clear his two arbitration years and keep him under contract through 2029.
Even with Rooker in the fold, the A’s project to be bad again in 2025, sitting with a 70.5 win total on DraftKings Sportsbook. They will, however, be moving out of the Oakland Coliseum and into a much less pitcher-friendly Sutter Health Park in Sacramento for the next three years, meaning Rooker should continue to pile up numbers.
