Kyrie Irving has missed two of the Mavericks’ last three games and the guard is now expected to miss at least 1-2 weeks more with a bulging disc in his back, per ESPN’s Shams Charania. This is a tough blow for Dallas, as Luka Doncic (calf) also remains sidelined and currently doesn’t have a timetable for a return.
The Mavericks have dropped four games in a row and, with both Irving and Doncic out for the foreseeable future, Spencer Dinwiddie and Quentin Grimes should continue to start and receive large workloads. Klay Thompson and P.J. Washington will take on larger roles, as well. With Irving and Doncic off the floor this season, Thompson, Washington, Dinwiddie and Grimes all have seen usage rates over 20%, with Washington leading the way at 24.4%. Furthermore, Dinwiddie handles a team-high 32.9% assist rate sans Irving and Doncic.
Dallas has lost all four of the games they have played with both Doncic and Irving inactive this season, and these tilts haven’t been particularly close, with the Mavericks losing these four contests by an average of 15 points. Considering their personnel and lack of offensive firepower with both Irving and Doncic hurt, the Mavericks’ struggles are unfortunately likely to continue until one of those stars returns.
