Jalen Johnson (shoulder) is out tonight vs. the Jazz and while one would assume this would result in a boost for Young as a scorer, that hasn’t been the case. In the four starts Young has made with Johnson inactive this season, Young is only averaging 18 PPG, which is a large drop from his 22.5 PPG average for the season. Of these four games sans Johnson, Young has only scored over 24.5 points one time.
In those four games with Johnson sidelined, Young’s has usage dramatically dropped to 23.1%, which is a huge drop from his 27.9% average for the season. The likely reason for this decrease is that with Johnson out, a much higher usage player in De’Andre Hunter sees more work off the bench. With Johnson inactive this season, Hunter has led the Hawks with a 29.2% usage rate.
As for Young’s matchup, he is facing a Utah defense that ranks dead last in defensive rating this season. However, the Jazz have been playing much better recently, with the club coming off road wins over the Heat and Magic. Utah won these games by an average of 19.5 PPG, and they held these two Florida teams to a low 96 PPG, which is the best defensive rating in the NBA when we compare every team’s last two games.
While this obviously needs to be taken lightly given it’s a two-game sample, the Jazz’s recent improvements are noteworthy and Young falling short of this high 24.5-point scoring line feels likely Tuesday.
