Donovan Mitchell’s scoring has taken a dip in the last two seasons. Throughout his tenure in Utah, he dominated the ball and had a permanent green light. He was the entire nucleus of the offense and had free reign to perform his best Kobe Bryant impersonation. For the first time, all of Cleveland’s top four are healthy at the same time for a prolonged period, which has turned this roster into a title contender. Mitchell’s forced to play within a system and default more responsibility to backcourt mate Darius Garland.
Mitchell is playing four fewer minutes a night because he has the luxury of sitting out plenty of fourth quarters because his squad is up by so much. That has hurt his overall averages, but he produces when he’s on the floor. In the prior two outings where he played at least 30 minutes, Mitchell’s cleared the 25-point threshold both times. Oklahoma City won’t roll over, and this game should come down to the wire. Mitchell should have a pivotal role throughout and, given the circumstances, should cruise over this line.
