Bowers has had a historic rookie season for the Raiders. He set two NFL rookie records last week against the Saints. He beat Mike Ditka’s record for most receiving yards by a rookie tight end and Puka Nacua’s one-year-old record for most receptions by a rookie at any position. Bowers has been the best tight end in the league in his rookie season, leading all tight ends in receptions and receiving yards. In fact, among all positions, Bowers is third in the league in receptions and seventh in receiving yards. Not to mention, Bowers has done all of that with multiple quarterbacks who have all played at a pretty poor level.
The Chargers are locked into an AFC Wildcard spot but their seeding can still change. As of writing this, the Steelers and Chargers have the same record. The Steelers hold the appropriate tiebreaker to have the fifth seed with the Chargers in the sixth seed. However, a Pittsburgh loss to Cincinnati would open the door for the Chargers to jump them with a win over the Raiders. Moving up one spot in the seeding might not seem like a huge deal but in the AFC, being the fifth seed means traveling to Houston instead of Baltimore or Buffalo. Whether it is the Chargers or Steelers, a trip to Houston is a much more winnable game than having to face one of the top two MVP favorites.
Jim Harbaugh has confirmed that his starters will be playing in this game.
“We’re going to play to win at all times … We’re attacking it with an enthusiasm unknown to mankind,” Harbaugh said on the “Let’s Go Podcast.” “The thing that doesn’t resonate right now is, you know, play the backups. What are we going to do? Dress 25 guys for the game?”
So, yes, it is safe to say Los Angeles will be playing its starters. That means the Chargers will have all of the usual members of their defense which ranks fourth in EPA/dropback and fourth in dropback success rate this season.
As great as Bowers has been, I am betting on him to go under 76.5 receiving yards this game. If the Chargers are fully loaded and motivated, they have one of the best pass defenses in football. Bowers played a solid game the first time these teams faced but that still only resulted in 58 receiving yards for the rookie. Bowers has only cleared this number in 7 of 16 games this season. It should be really difficult to clear this number on Sunday against a top-five pass defense in the league.
