When the PGA TOUR’s 2025 season gets underway on Thursday at The Sentry, golf fans can expect lots of birdies. The Plantation Course at Kapalua, which has hosted the tournament for the last 27 years, has been the easiest course on the PGA TOUR’s regular circuit, with a scoring average of -4.64. The no-cut Hawaiian stop is open to only sixty players as the first of the PGA TOUR’s eight signature events.
Among the easiest holes on the course is the second, a 219-yard par three that usually plays downwind and favors a fade from a right-handed player. Despite being the longest of the Plantation Course’s three par threes, the course lists it as the 17 handicap hole. Last year, it showed some of its teeth, finishing as the second-hardest hole on the course, but it’s still very gettable, yielding 30 birdies in 2024.

Of all the players in the field, Xander Schauffele might be the best-equipped to birdie it, which shouldn’t be a surprise from the highest-ranked player in the field. The two-time major champion has long been one of the best iron players on tour, and his left-to-right shot shape should work perfectly with the left-to-right sloping green. Schauffele ranks sixth on the PGA TOUR in Strokes Gained: Approach to the Green and 12th in Strokes Gained: Putting, giving him a huge advantage on any par three.
Schauffele is particularly good with his long irons; last year, he averaged 34 feet, 10 inches from the hole on approaches between 200 and 225 years, just like the tee shot on Kapalua’s second. He was also 11th on the PGA TOUR in birdie or better percentage on par threes, going under par on 17.35% of his holes in 2024. Once on the green, Schauffele recorded one-putts on 42.12% of his holes in 2024, which was good for 26th-best on the PGA TOUR.
