The Jets are on the hunt for their next head coach. These are the odds to be the next New York head coach at DraftKings Sportsbook.
A surprising name is at the top of the odds board to be the next head coach of the Jets. Former Jets and Bills head coach Rex Ryan is the favorite at odds of +300. Ryan was the Jets head coach from 2009-to-2014 and brought the team to back-to-back AFC Championship Games in 2010 and 2011. In fact, Ryan has twice as many playoff wins as any other head coach in Jets franchise history. Many Jets fans look back at the years under Rex Ryan fondly, however, Ryan did leave to coach the Bills after things started to turn downhill. After being fired from the Buffalo job in 2016, Ryan decided to head to TV instead of finding another coaching gig and he has been there ever since. However, it has been reported that the Jets will interview Ryan for the position. However, after almost a decade away from football, I find it hard to believe that the Jets will hire Ryan for their coaching vacancy.
Mike Vrabel and Ben Johnson have been the top two names mentioned in this upcoming coaching cycle for every team with a head coaching vacancy. Ben Johnson is the current OC of the Lions and is the mastermind behind the highest-scoring offense in the NFL. Johnson will likely get to pick the team that he wants to coach next season. It is very unlikely that Johnson would pass up the chance to coach Caleb Williams and the Bears — or whichever team drafts Shedeur Sanders or Cam Ward — to coach a 41-year-old political commentator cosplaying as an NFL quarterback. So, it is probably safe to rule out Ben Johnson.
Mike Vrabel was really successful as the head coach of the Titans, including a trip to the AFC Championship Game. He was unexpectedly fired at the end of the 2022-23 NFL season and the Titans have been disastrous without him. Vrabel took one season off after being fired but appears ready to get back on the sideline for the 2025-26 season. Vrabel is another coach who will likely get to pick his job for next season, not the other way around. Vrabel is highly regarded around the league and is a great defensive coach, but more importantly a great leader and players’ coach. Vrabel is another guy who seems too smart to hitch himself to a wagon being operated by an egomaniacal pharmaceuticals CEO, so he can also be ruled out.
The Jets have always liked hiring defensive-minded coaches, most recently Robert Saleh. This seems like a time when they will pivot and try to be more progressive and hire a young offensive coach. One name that could start to emerge is Kliff Kingsbury. Kingsbury was a college coach, known for his offensive ingenuity, that got hired to be the head coach of the Cardinals when Kyler Murray was drafted. However, he had some struggles there. He was eventually fired and then took some time off from football before returning as the Commanders’ offensive coordinator. He has had a lot of success with rookie QB Jayden Daniels and will be heading to the playoffs this season.
At odds of +1600, I think it is worth a bet on Kingsbury to be the next Jets head coach. Kingsbury has always been very ambitious and he likely wants to be a head coach again as soon as possible. Before hiring Adam Gase, the Jets strongly considered hiring Kingsbury when he left Texas Tech. The Jets’ ownership obviously had a lot of respect for Kingsbury then, and as they look to the post-Rodgers era at quarterback, they could want Kingsbury to develop their quarterback of the future, whoever it may be.
