To start the season, Stephen Curry has been an every-other-game guy. Whether it’s age or a prolonged slump, the two-time MVP has been unable to channel his top level on a nightly basis. In the last week, Curry had a stinker against Indiana, dropped 38 against Los Angeles on Christmas, and followed that up with an inefficient showing against shorthanded Phoenix. He’s still shooting over 40% from distance on significant volume, but the work within the arc has been lackluster.
Curry gets a bounceback spot on Monday against Cleveland, whose elite interior defense doesn’t translate beyond the three-point line. The Warriors have tumbled to the nine seed after going 3-7 in their last 10 games. It’s hard to call any contest in December a “must-win,” but a few bad weeks in the Western Conference could knock a squad out of playoff contention.
Golden State needs to find its form, and it starts with Curry asserting himself as the alpha. This group needs him to be a more prominent scorer and take the reins on offense. Expect the 16-year veteran to be more assertive and consistently produce on the stat sheets. Take advantage of this line through his mini rough patch — he could clear 25+ points in three quarters when decisive.
