Guard
Stud
Cade Cunningham, Detroit Pistons at Denver Nuggets ($10,200): The Nuggets’ defense hasn’t looked good lately, but then Friday happened. The Cavs came to town and scored 149 points in Denver. The Cavs hit 23-of-48 three-point attempts. Cunningham is a top-10 player (Versatility Index and P+R+A) who plays nearly 40 minutes per game with a usage rate north of 30%.
Other Options: Stephen Curry ($8,900)
Value
Scoot Henderson, Portland Trail Blazers vs. Dallas Mavericks ($4,300): The Blazers’ Dalano Banton ($3,700) has missed three games in a row and Toumani Camara ($4,800) is questionable. Scoot scored 41.5 DKFP in 30 minutes off the bench on Thursday. He’s played 25 to 30 minutes per night all season and could play north of 30 on Saturday. Dallas is stretched thin at the moment with injuries and possible suspensions, plus this is the second night of a back-to-back and their third game in four days.
Other Options: Quentin Grimes ($5,100)
Forward
Stud
LeBron James, Los Angeles Lakers vs. Sacramento Kings ($9,500): The top of the forward position isn’t great, and Kevin Durant ($9,100) continues to disappoint in great spots. The last time James played was Christmas Day when he scored 59 DKFP. Back-to-back game-winning opportunities mean coach JJ Reddick still believes James is King, while King James still thinks he’s a king. DFS ceilings are all about ego, and James has arguably the biggest ego in sports.
Other Options: Kevin Durant ($9,100)
Value
Royce O’Neale, Phoenix Suns at Golden State ($5,200): The Suns’ Devin Booker ($9,000) and Grayson Allen ($5,000) are still out. O’Neale’s minutes and usage rate have not budged, but his role has changed. O’Neale stepped down to help the second unit on Christmas Day. Ryan Dunn ($3,500), an exceptional defender, took O’Neale’s starting spot. In the last two games, O’Neale has scored 30.5 and 35.25 DKFP mainly with peripheral stats. The supplementary stats should sustain a solid floor moving forward.
Other Options: OG Anunoby ($5,800)
Center
Stud
Nikola Jokic, Denver Nuggets vs. Detroit Pistons ($11,900): The 2023 NBA Champions are the seventh-place team in the Western Conference having lost two in a row and three of their last five. The good news is that the Denver offense scored 135 points on the Cavs. That’s quite a feat. They accomplished this by returning to their normal offense, running it through the Joker (13 assists). Jokic scored 74 DKFP against the Cavs’ formidable frontcourt without making a single three-point attempt.
Other Options: Karl-Anthony Towns ($9,700)
Value
Mason Plumlee, Phoenix Suns at Golden State Warriors ($3,600): Teammate Jusuf Nurkic ($5,800) threw a hook and got the ejection hook on Friday night. The Suns are actively shopping Nurkic. Suspension or not, it seems like Nurkic will sit out the second night of the back-to-back. Plumlee replaced Nurkic on Friday and scored 18.25 DKFP. He’ll get an increase in minutes. Oso Ighodaro ($3,000) could get a huge minutes boost in the matchup with the Warriors’ athletic big man Trayce Jackson-Davis ($4,300) running around.
Other Options: Oso Ighodaro ($3,000), Trayce Jackson-Davis ($4,300)
