The PGA TOUR season will tee off next week in Hawaii at The Sentry, but the reigning Player of the Year will not be in action. The Sentry is a Signature Event and will have a great field, but it won’t have Scottie Scheffler. The No. 1 player in the world withdrew from the event on Friday and will be out for several weeks.
According to an official statement from the PGA TOUR, Scheffler sustained a puncture wound to the palm of his right hand on Christmas Day while he was preparing dinner. Small glass fragments from a broken glass remained in the palm of his hand, and he will require surgery.
He is expected to be back to 100 percent in three to four weeks and is next scheduled to play at The American Express, which is scheduled for January 16-19 in La Quinta, California. Since that is close to the end of his expected recovery time, it isn’t clear if he’ll have time to ramp back up to his usual form.
When he’s at his best, Scheffler has proven he’s the best golfer in the world, winning seven official PGA TOUR events in 2024. He also added wins at the 2024 Olympics, The Presidents Cup and the Hero World Challenge and claimed his second major championship at The Masters. It was a roller coaster of a year for Scheffler on multiple levels since his 2024 also included the birth of his first child and his bizarre arrest just before the start of the 2024 PGA Championship in Louisville.
This incident on Christmas Day closes out the year with more headlines for the top golfer in the world.
