Old rivals meet on Christmas when the Lakers visit the Bay to take on Steph Curry and the Warriors. While LeBron James has garnered most of the headlines, Los Angeles’ best player is Anthony Davis. The nine-time All-Star has been nothing short of dominant this season, ranking third in the NBA in double-doubles (21). Golden State enters the contest as four-point favorites, with the over/under set at 221.5 points. Davis’ offensive numbers stand out, as he’s averaging 26.6 points, 11.8 rebounds and 3.5 assists on 52.3% shooting from the field. However, he’s been just as impressive on the defensive end of the floor, producing 2.2 blocks and 1.3 steals through 28 games. Los Angeles’ success is directly correlated to The Brow, going 14-7 in games the big man scores more than 20 points in.
Tonight’s showdown won’t be easy for most Lakers. Golden State is holding opponents to just 110.8 points per game, 12th-fewest in basketball. The Warriors have been especially tough down low, surrendering the second-fewest points in the paint (44.3). If Los Angeles has any hope of nabbing a road win, they’ll need to utilize their biggest advantage: Davis’ size.
If there’s any weakness on the Warriors’ defense, it’s an inability to box out. Partially due to the lack of quality big men on the roster, Golden State is giving up the fourth-most rebounds per game to opponents (54.6). That number has risen to 59.7 over the past three games, most in the NBA. None of those stats bode well going into a matchup with one of the game’s best rebounders.
Excluding a 12-minute outing last March, Davis has gone over this rebounding total in four of his last five outings vs. the Warriors. Ahead of this primetime clash, look for the future Hall of Famer to dominate the glass on Wednesday.
