DraftKings Value Picks
PF Jonathan Kuminga ($5,700)
Golden State needs to unleash Jonathan Kuminga. The combo forward is a throwback with various ways to score around the cup. He uses his prototypical frame and athleticism to abuse smaller defenders around the paint. His rapidly-developing jumper complements his inside-out offensive arsenal. Kuminga can sometimes play a bit out of control, rushing his process and appearing too unpolished. At this point, he’s a bright spot on a roster largely devoid of talent around Steph Curry, and is finally allowed to make some mistakes without fear of having his playing time diminished.
Kuminga is coming off a stellar showing, dropping 26 points and gobbling up eight boards in a complete effort against Indiana. It’s the fourth time in six games the former lottery pick has hit the 20-point threshold. He looks far more comfortable with his new, expanded role. Kuminga can stuff the stat sheet and establish himself as a DFS weapon, so he should feast against a disastrous LA defense.
PG/SG Payton Pritchard ($5,700)
It’s not even the turn of the new year, and I think it’s already time to hand Payton Pritchard the NBA Value MVP. The Boston guard isn’t just having an excellent shooting season; he’s having one of the best shot-making campaigns ever. His shot-making index, which combines his percentages from three, off-the-dribble jumpers, and at the rim, is the best we’ve seen in the last 15 seasons. It currently slightly edges out any run from guys like Stephen Curry, Chris Paul, or LeBron James. The volume is far more condensed than that of those first-ballot Hall of Famers, but this efficiency is also unheard of.
Pritchard is averaging just under 16 points per night despite ranking fifth in shots per game on his own team. He’s a lightning rod off the bench who has been handed the keys to the second unit. The 26-year-old has a fluorescent green light and will make the most of his time on the court. If he converts his attempts from distance, he will produce at an elite clip. Considering Pritchard has had a few substandard performances in a row, a primetime showcase is the perfect place to get back on track.
