Amidst all the good teams in the crowded Western Conference standings, the Minnesota Timberwolves weren’t expected to be near the back of the pack. But after trading Karl-Anthony Towns for Julius Randle and Donte DiVincenzo in the offseason, Minnesota has struggled to get anything going. The Timberwolves are 14-13, behind the Kawhi Leonard-less LA Clippers and San Antonio Spurs in the standings.
None of Minnesota’s struggles have been Anthony Edwards’ fault. The former first overall pick is averaging 25.6 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per game while shooting a career-high 42.1% from beyond the arc. Edwards and the Timberwolves will travel to the Peach State to take on the Atlanta Hawks at 7:30 p.m. ET tonight.
On DraftKings Sportsbook, Minnesota (-170) is a moderate favorite and the point total is set to 225, although both of those numbers may change if Atlanta point guard Trae Young, questionable with a right heel contusion, misses his second straight game. As has been a theme throughout most of Young’s career, Atlanta’s defense has been bad. The Hawks allow 119.6 points per game, the third-most in the NBA. Shooting guard Dyson Daniels and power forward Jalen Johnson are above-average defenders, but the other three members of Atlanta’s starting five — Young, rookie small forward Zaccharie Risacher, and center Clint Capela — are all negatives on the less glamorous end. Atlanta also plays at the league’s third-fastest pace, which should increase Edwards’ possessions and give him plenty of opportunities to score.
Anthony Edwards O4.5 Three-Pointers Made (+114)
I also expect Edwards to inflict plenty of damage from beyond the arc against a Hawks team that has allowed opponents to attempt 41.5 three-pointers per game, the most of any team in the league. To make matters worse for Atlanta, opponents have hit them at a 38.4% clip, the highest in the NBA. Part of it is good shooting luck, but much of it lies in the Hawks’ lackadaisical defensive approach, as it concedes both open and wide-open threes at top-five rates. Overall, more than 54% of opponents’ shots come with the nearest Atlanta defender more than four feet away. Edwards has made 43.3% of his 208 open or wide-open threes this season.
