NFL Week 16 is almost in the books, pending Monday night’s matchup, but the opening odds for Week 17 are up on DraftKings Sportsbook and it’s time to give a looky-loo.
This will be championship week for many fantasy leagues. It could also be the start of silly season as some teams have clinched playoff spots while others can start making plans for vacations. KC, BUF, PIT, HOU, BAL, DET, PHI and MIN are in. NYJ, JAX, NE, CLE, TEN, LV, ARI, SF, DAL, NO, CHI, CAR and NYG are out.
It’s a week to be merry because it’s Christmas, and we get two games on Wednesday as a result. HO! HO! HO! Kansas City visits Pittsburgh then Baltimore travels to Houston.
The Thursday night game has the Seahawks flying into Chicago to take on a soon-to-be hibernating Bears team.
We get … not one … not two … but three Saturday games! Yippee!!! The Chargers fly to New England for the morning game. The Broncos hope to gallop out of Cincinnati with another victory. For the night cap, the Rams host the clipped wings of the Cardinals.
The early Sunday slate consists of six games. There is one double-digit favorite and only one game within a field goal.
The late-afternoon slate consists of only two games, and the night game has the Commanders hosting the Falcons.
The Monday Night game looked mighty tasty before the season started. Detroit held up its end of the bargain but the 49ers are out of the playoff picture.

The Chiefs won’t stop, can’t stop, as they’ve won five straight after losing their only game of the season back in November. They technically haven’t sewn up the No. 1 seed yet, as the Bills are two games back. Pittsburgh has lost two straight and are now tied with Baltimore atop the AFC North. They have clinched a playoff spot because the rest of the AFC is porous, so it will be interesting to see how they approach this game, as they could meet in the playoffs in a few weeks.

Baltimore has won two straight and is assured a spot in the playoffs. The only question is if it’s as a division winner or wild card team. Houston just lost to Kansas City, but they have clinched a playoff spot as well. How much will both teams show in this one?

Chicago has lost an impressive nine games in a row. Hibernation time came early this season. Seattle has lost two straight but it is still in the playoff hunt. They are one game behind the Rams and the teams meet in Week 18, but Seattle needs to take care of business here first.

The Chargers are still in the hunt to nab a wild card slot. They are currently tied with the Broncos at 9-6, but they beat Denver twice this season. The schedule lines up well for Los Angeles, as it finishes with the Patriots then Raiders in Week 18. New England has lost five straight but Drake Maye has been showing things.

A clash of styles, as Denver plays to its defense while Cincinnati is all about Joe Burrow and the offense. Despite a 7-8 record, the Bengals still have a shot to grab a wild card slot.

Arizona was in good position to win the NFC West heading into its bye. They Cardinals have since lost four of five games and are out of the playoff picture. Life comes at you fast. The Rams are in the heat of the playoff race, having won four straight. One of those was the impressive 44-42 win over Buffalo. This team can beat anyone on any given week. They can also lose to anyone on any given week.

Remember when the Jets were going to the Super Bowl and the Aaron Rodgers/Garrett Wilson stacks were going to take us to the fantasy Promised Land? Those were good times. The Bills are a juggernaught but struggled in Week 16 against the Patriots, eeking out a 24-21 victory. Josh Allen injured his throwing hand at the end of Week 16, so it will be interesting to see how the Bills manage these last two weeks.

The NFC North is such an interesting division. The Lions and Vikings both have only two losses while the Packers have four losses. Minnesota finishes the regular season with Green Bay and Detroit while Green Bay gets Chicago for its final game.

All you need to know about the Raiders is that their owner was dancing in the locker room after the Week 16 win, which increased the record to 3-12 while decreasing the odds to get the No. 1 overall pick. They could have selected the next franchise quarterback with that draft pick which could change the fortunes around. The Saints ain’t marching around playing happy tunes with a 5-9 record.

The Colts are still in the playoff picture despite a 7-8 record. Jonathan Taylor rushed 29 times for 218 yards and three touchdowns in Week 16. Now he gets to face a Giants team that allows 4.8 yards per carry and the sixth-most EPA per carry.

Carolina is coming off a 36-30 win over Arizona. The Panthers have four wins on the season but Bryce Young has shown some things. These teams met in Week 13 with Tampa Bay eking out a 26-23 win in overtime. Carolina can play spoiler as Tampa Bay is still in the hunt for the playoffs.

Philadelphia is in the playoffs and still in the running for the No. 1 seed. The Eagles lost to Washington in Week 16, but Jalen Hurts was knocked out with a concussion. His status is in doubt for Week 17. Dallas has won two straight and four of the last five games. Cooper Rush for President! These teams met in Week 10 with the Eagles trouncing the Cowboys 34-6. Rush went 13-of-23 for 45 yards. OK, take Rush off the ballot.

The Michael Penix Jr. era began in positive fashion, as the Falcons won 34-7 in his debut. The stats weren’t great, though, as Penix went 18-of-27 for 202 yards and an interception. Washington has won three straight and is still in the playoff hunt at 10-5. Jayden Daniels looks healthy, as he cooked the Eagles defense in Week 16 for 258 yards passing, five touchdowns and 81 yards on the ground.

This game shows why it’s so difficult to prognosticate NFL defenses and strength of schedule. Prior to the start of the season, this was set up to be a contest between two of the best teams in the league. San Francisco was decimated by the injury gods and is out of the playoff picture. The offense has scored fewer than 18 points in five of the last six games.
