Ja’Marr Chase has been the best receiver in the NFL this season and it’s not even close. Chase leads the league in receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns through 15 weeks. The Bengals haven’t had the season that they hoped for but with three games left, they do still have a shot at a playoff spot. There should be an all-out effort from Chase, Joe Burrow and the Bengals every week unless they are officially eliminated at some point. This week they take on the Browns in a really winnable game that could allow them to survive another week.
In their first matchup against the Browns, the Bengals won 21-14 on the road. Chase had a modest, by his standards, five catches for 55 yards and a touchdown. At home in a must-win spot, the Bengals’ offense should perform much better than they did in that first matchup. The Bengals’ offense ranks 6th in EPA/dropback and 3rd in dropback success rate. That gives them a big advantage over the Cleveland defense which ranks 17th in defensive EPA/dropback.
One thing that the Cleveland defense does well is limiting short passes underneath. They rank 5th in defensive dropback success rate. They should take away the short passes to Chase Brown and other targets. That will leave Ja’Marr Chase as the deep shot target for Joe Burrow to break this Cleveland defense. The Browns have allowed nine passes of 40+ yards this season, the fifth-most in the league, and 49 passes of 20+ yards, the fourth-most in the league. Chase has had a catch of 29 yards or more in five straight games. Chase should be able to hit that number again and clear his longest reception prop of 26.5 yards.
