All eyes will be on center Karl-Anthony Towns tonight as the New York Knicks big man makes his return to Minnesota for a 9:30 p.m. ET matchup against the Timberwolves. Towns has averaged 24.8 points and a league-leading 13.9 rebounds per game in his first season after a surprising offseason blockbuster trade brought him to the Big Apple.
Still, New York’s centerpiece is the first man selected as the team’s captain since 2018-19, point guard Jalen Brunson. The southpaw has taken a little bit of a scoring backseat after finishing fifth in Most Valuable Player voting last year, but he’s still averaging 25.0 points and a career-high 7.7 assists per game on 49-43-82 splits.

Minnesota’s defense has been absolutely stifling in recent weeks, as the Timberwolves have allowed only 99.3 points per 100 possessions in their last 10 games, four points better than any other team in the league and a number that would be the best across a full season since the 2015-16 San Antonio Spurs. After finishing with the league’s best defense in the 2023-24 season with a core built around Towns and four-time Defensive Player of the Year Rudy Gobert, Minnesota is starting to turn it around.
That’s bad news for Brunson, who will likely be hounded by shooting guard Anthony Edwards and small forward Jaden McDaniels on the perimeter all game. His scoring has taken a small step back in the last few weeks and he has posted 34 or fewer combined points, rebounds, and assists in four of his last seven games. I also expect Tuesday to be a big game for Towns, especially given Gobert’s historical struggles against centers who are able to drag him away from the paint and the fact that it’s his homecoming game and New York might feed him a few extra touches to remind Timberwolves fans what they’ve lost.
