Joel Embiid Injury Update: December 20 vs. Hornets

Joel Embiid Injury Update: December 20 vs. Hornets

Updated:

By: Alex Hunter

Embiid has missed one game with a sinus fracture, but the center has been listed as questionable for Friday’s matchup vs. the Hornets. Also, Caleb Martin (shoulder) will his third straight and Adem Bona (knee) have been removed from the 76ers’ injury report after missing five games.

Given the NBA’s decreased schedule over the last week due to the NBA Cup, Embiid will have not played in a week by Friday. If the big man plays, Embiid will likely wear a protective mask on his face, but he shouldn’t be under a minutes limit. Before suffering the sinus fracture on December 13th, Embiid had seen over 30 minutes in four straight starts.

If the former MVP is back in the 76ers’ lineup, all of Philadelphia’s players will see hits to their roles. Embiid ranks third in the NBA in usage (33.1%) and Paul George and Tyrese Maxey specifically have seen their usage rates drop 6.5 and 5.4 percentage points, respectively, with Embiid on the court this season.

Both the 76ers and Hornets are bottom-ten teams in pace this season and in this slow paced setting, George and Maxey will both be players to avoid for DFS if Embiid suits up. Furthermore, backing George and Maxey to go under on their player props on the DraftKings Sportsbook will have merit if Embiid is active, as George and Maxey’s lines may be inflated after they just flourished with Embiid inactive for their last game.
