After losing just their second game of the season Sunday vs. the Bills, the Lions received some brutal news Monday that Montgomery will miss the rest of the season with an MCL injury that requires surgery, per Dan Campbell.
Montgomery and Gibbs ($7,500) are the best running back duo in the NFL and with Montgomery sidelined, Gibbs should be a fantasy superstar in a more featured role.
With Montgomery only available for 30% of the snaps vs. Buffalo this past Sunday, Gibbs flourished with 28.4 FPTS. The back finished with 114 scrimmage yards and two touchdowns while logging a season-high 74.7% of the snaps.
With Montgomery inactive three times last season, Gibbs provided 23.2 FPTS per game while logging 72.2% of the snaps. In those three tilts, the back averaged 18 carries per game – including five redzone attempts – which was 68.3% of the Lions’ running back carries. Additionally, Gibbs averaged six catches per game and saw a target on 19% of his routes.
Gibbs ranks fourth among all running backs in FPTS per snap this season (0.53) and he should see right around 20 touches on weekly basis with Montgomery missing.
For Gibbs’ first game of the season without Montgomery, Gibbs faces the Bears this Sunday, who are yielding the fourth-most yards per rush this season (4.8). Gibbs has a ceiling over 30 FPTS in this beautiful spot and while he will be a popular option for DFS on DraftKings, Gibbs is a prime example of good chalk to embrace at his $7,500 salary, which is just too low for his upside with Montgomery unavailable.
