De’Von Achane has developed an interesting role for the Dolphins. Miami had a very crowded backfield to start the season but as the season went on, Achane became the clear lead back. He started to take a majority of the snaps and a majority of the carries each week. However, Miami’s entire offense has shifted to become much more pass-heavy over the past few weeks. Over their past three games, Miami has thrown the ball on over 71% of their offensive plays, the highest mark in the NFL over that stretch.
Achane has adapted along with the rest of the offense to become more of a receiver than a runner. He is still the top running back in this backfield but he has become much more of a passing threat than a runner simply due to the play-calling. Achane has more receiving yards than rushing yards each of the past two weeks, and he has more receiving touchdowns than he does rushing touchdowns on the season. That trend should continue against Houston.
The Texans are going to be able to score against the Dolphins’ defense. That means Miami will need to throw to keep up with the Houston offense, which is probably what they want to do anyway. Houston ranks fourth in defensive EPA/play and they hardly ever allow deep shots. That means it could be a quiet game for Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, but it should set up nicely for Achane and Jonnu Smith to catch short balls underneath. The lack of deep balls will require a more methodical approach from Miami, which should lead to more targets for Achane out of the backfield. That is why I am backing him to go over 4.5 receptions in this game.
