It’s challenging to evaluate Caleb Williams, given his treacherous situation. They have a negative EPA per rush, a substandard offensive line, and an offensive scheme that seems to make less sense by the week. Somehow, the former Heisman winner has had some promising outings, including the previous meeting against the vaunted Minnesota defense.
Even on a rainy Chicago afternoon, Williams delivered the most impressive performance of his career. He tossed for 340 yards and a pair of touchdowns, leading a furious comeback to force overtime. His accuracy has been shaky, but Williams has elite arm talent and can make any throw if kept upright.
With both starting tackles back in the lineup, Williams has been pressured on 15% less of his dropbacks but hasn’t been able to execute. With an interim head coach and the postseason out of reach, there is nothing to play for but pride, but the 23-year-old isn’t about to roll over. In a spot-to-play spoiler, Williams will have enough throwing volume to surpass two touchdowns and help smash this tantalizing line.
