It is already Week 15 in the NFL and we have a NFC West divisional matchup on Thursday Night Football between the Rams and 49ers. With the NFC West up for grabs, both teams will be desperate to build momentum with a win. Los Angeles and San Francisco are also both coming off impressive wins and scored 44 and 38 points, respectively, in Week 14, so we should probably expect quite a few touchdowns.
There’s that word… touchdown. This matchup is full of superstars and there are plenty of enticing options on DraftKings Sportsbook but who will score the first touchdown on Thursday Night Football? Below, I break down my favorite choice.
Los Angeles Rams at San Francisco 49ers
Jauan Jennings First TD Scorer (+1000)
Fading Kyren Williams is a dangerous game but the Rams have not scored an opening-drive touchdown in a single road game this season. This game could be high-scoring and San Francisco found its legs last week against Chicago and scored a touchdown on three of its first four offensive possessions. Oh, and Jennings was on the receiving end of two of those touchdowns, including the first touchdown of the game from seven yards out. On the season, he ranks second on the team in red zone targets (14) and is tied with George Kittle for the most end zone targets (8).
The 49ers have struggled in the red zone this season––scoring a touchdown just 52.94% of the time. But, they’re coming off a strong offensive outing and now get to face a Rams secondary that has allowed the third-most touchdowns to opposing wide receivers this season. While Jennings has been asked to line up out wide more often this season, four of his six touchdowns have come via the slot. He draws a favorable matchup against safety Quentin Lake, who just allowed a touchdown to Mack Hollins from the slot last week.
Plus, the 49ers’ running back room is banged up, so I’d expect Brock Purdy and the offense to lean on their playmakers early and often in a must-win divisional matchup.
