NBA Props: Domantas Sabonis Best Bet for Kings at Pelicans

After a two-day midseason break to let the knockout stages of the Emirates NBA Cup take center stage, regular season NBA action ramps back up tonight with a three-game slate, featuring two battles in the East and one in the West. In the West, the Sacramento Kings will travel to New Orleans to battle the hapless Pelicans at 8 p.m. ET.

The beam hasn’t been lit in Sacramento quite as often as Kings fans would have liked, but the Kings are still one of many competitive teams in the morass that is the Western Conference, sitting at 12-13 and in 12th place. The 5-20 Pelicans are not.

Sacramento center Domantas Sabonis — who has received MVP votes in each of the past two seasons — is having perhaps the best individual season of his career, averaging 20.8 points, 12.7 rebounds, and 6.2 assists on ridiculous 62-43-82 shooting splits. Along with Denver’s Nikola Jokić and Houston’s Alperen Şengün, Sabonis has become one of the faces of the NBA’s recent point-center revolution.

On DraftKings Sportsbook, the Kings (-270) are heavy favorites and the point total is set to 231.5. Below, I’ve highlighted my favorite prop bet centered around Sabonis.

Domantas Sabonis 40+ Points + Rebounds + Assists (+110)

The Pelicans started the season without a reliable veteran center after losing Jonas Valančiūnas in a sign-and-trade with the Washington Wizards in the offseason. An injury to power forward Zion Williamson didn’t help New Orleans’ issues with size and physicality. In his absence, the Pelicans have been relying on rookie Yvis Missi to man the middle, and while he’s been solid, it’s a matchup that Sabonis should be able to exploit.

Overall, the Pelicans have bottom-ten ranks in pretty much every important defensive metric. In particular, New Orleans has struggled to crash the glass, allowing opponents to rack up 45.6 rebounds per game, the fourth-most in the league. The Pelicans have also been unable to stop teams that rely heavily on ball movement, conceding 28.6 assists per game, also the fourth-most in basketball.

A versatile center like Sabonis, whose 17.9% rebounding percentage ranks 12th among players averaging at least 20 minutes per game and whose 6.2 assists per game rank second among centers, has a chance to put up a huge statistical performance against New Orleans. He’s had at least 40 P/R/A in four of his last seven games.
