Alvin Kamara ($7,700) missed his second practice in a row Thursday with an illness and there is a chance the back is out this Sunday vs. the Commanders. With the Saints at 5-8 and essentially out of contention for a playoff spot, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Kamara sit.
If that is the case, Kendre Miller ($4,500) and Jamaal Williams ($4,200) would be the remaining options in this New Orleans backfield. While Miller has only played in three games this season, the second-year player will likely operate as the Saints’ top back if Kamara is inactive and be an excellent value play to attack.
Coming off a four-game absence due to a back injury this past Sunday vs. the Giants, Miller was the clear No. 2 back behind Kamara. The veteran led the way with 17 carries, but Miller wasn’t far behind with 10 rushes and he notably saw the Saints’ lone running back carry in the red zone. Overall, Miller saw a 33.3% rush share and logged 26.5% of the snaps, and he finished 32 rushing yards and a touchdown (9.2 FPTS). Meanwhile, Williams only saw three carries and played 7.4% of the snaps.
The Saints used a third-round draft pick on Miller last season and giving him the majority of the work if Kamara is out is the logical move instead of featuring the 29-year-old Williams.
Miller is averaging 4.4 YPC and a solid 0.34 FPTS per snap this season, and the 22-year-old will be an appealing punt play against a Commanders defense that is giving up the fourth-most yards per rush (4.8) if Kamara is ruled out.
