Brock Purdy and the 49ers have had a rough season so far. Last season, the 49ers had the best offense in the NFL by EPA/play and Brock Purdy was the best quarterback in the league by EPA+CPOE composite. This season, Purdy ranks 8th in EPA+CPOE composite and the 49ers’ offense ranks 10th in EPA/play. So, this is still a top-ten offense, which for most teams would be great, but there has been a major drop-off from last season. Purdy has been banged up at times this season, Deebo Samuel and Trent Williams have missed multiple games each, and Christian McCaffrey will be out for the rest of the season after already coming back late.
All of that being said, the 49ers are still very much in the NFC playoff race. They are just two games back on the wildcard and two games back on the Seahawks in the NFC West. However, the Rams are one of the teams that sit between them and a playoff spot, so they desperately need to win this game. The 49ers will need to be aggressive to get this win against a Rams team that is riding high after knocking off the Bills last week. The Rams’ passing attack is one of the best in the league at the moment, and the 49ers will need to match that to win this game.
My favorite prop bet for this game is for Purdy to go over his completions prop, set at 20.5. The 49ers are already without Christian McCaffrey and Jordan Mason at running back. They could now could be missing Isaac Guerendo for this game as well. With such a depleted and inexperienced running back room, Kyle Shanahan should put the burden on Brock Purdy’s shoulders to win this game.
The Rams’ defense ranks 19th in opponent completion percentage, 29th in EPA/dropback, and 27th in dropback success rate. This secondary can be exploited. The Rams will likely try to limit the explosive play, making it easy for Purdy to pick up easy completions underneath. With the lack of running backs, Shanahan will heavily use the screen pass game in lieu of running the ball. All of these factors should push Purdy over his completions prop.
