Scottie Barnes sprained his ankle during Monday’s loss to the Knicks and the forward is expected to miss several weeks with the right ankle injury, per ESPN’s Shams Charania.
Barnes is averaging 20.6 points, 8.4 rebounds and 7.4 assists per game this season — all of which are career highs — but he has only been available for 14 of the Raptors’ 25 games. On top of Barnes, Immanuel Quickley (elbow) remains out for Toronto and the guard currently doesn’t have a timetable for a return.
With Barnes and Quickley out for the foreseeable future, RJ Barrett should be the Raptors’ main option and put up big numbers. Barrett has played nine games with both Barnes and Quickley inactive this season and in those tilts, Barrett has led Toronto with a 31.9% usage rate, averaging 25.2 points and 7.6 assists.
Jakob Poeltl should also see a notable boost. In those nine games sans Barnes and Quickley, Poeltl’s usage increased to 22.3% and he produced 21.0 points and 12.1 rebounds per game. Lastly, Davion Mitchell started in each of the nine games Barnes has missed this season and he is the top candidate to start in place of Barnes going forward.
As a team, the Raptors have lost three in a row and they are 2-7 with Barnes and Quickley inactive this season, so unfortunately, Toronto’s struggles are likely to continue with those two key players sidelined.
