Stop me if you’ve heard this one before, but the Red Sox have reportedly acquired a tall, flame-throwing left-handed pitcher from the White Sox in exchange for some top prospects. Time is a flat circle, people. According to the Boston Globe’s Julian McWilliams, Garrett Crochet is on his way to Boston with Kyle Teel as part of the package that’s headed back to Chicago. Per the Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal, the White Sox will also receive outfielder Braden Montgomery, infielder Chase Meidroth and right-hander Wikelman Gonzalez.
Crochet is a former top prospect himself, once the 11th-overall pick in the 2020 MLB Draft. The left-hander reached the major league level quickly as a reliever, yet made the transition to Chicago’s rotation for the first time to begin 2024. He did not disappoint. Across 146.0 innings, Crochet maintained a 2.83 xERA with a 2.69 FIP. Among all pitchers to throw 100 innings, the 25-year-old’s 35.1% strikeout rate ranked as the best in baseball. Volume is really the lone concern with Crochet. While he did technically start 32 games last season, he was on a pretty stringent innings cap following the All-Star break. Prior to 2024, the most frames Crochet had thrown with the White Sox in a single campaign was 54.1 in 2021.
Teel and Montgomery are the clear headliners of the return package for Chicago. According to MLB Pipeline, Teel is the the 25th-overall prospect in the league and the third-best catching prospect. Montgomery was the Red Sox’s fifth-overall prospect and sits just outside the Top 50 for all of baseball.
