After a tough stretch of games, the market hit rock bottom on the 49ers this past Sunday. San Francisco was laying just three points at home to a Bears team that hasn’t won since defeating the Jaguars overseas on October 13. The Niners flexed in a dominant 38-13 win that wasn’t even as close as the score indicated. The Niners held Chicago’s offense to four yards in the first half, and while we have to acknowledge that a lot of that is ineptitude by the Bears, it was also an impressive performance for San Francisco.
As seems to be the case every week, the 49ers sustained some injuries in the win. This time, they’ll likely have to move to the next-man-up at running back for the third game in a row, but that’s been a plug-and-play position that they’ve been able to have success with. Assuming names like Trent Williams and Nick Bosa remain out doesn’t make things ideal, but this team has been playing without those guys, and looked good doing so on Sunday.
The short week presents a tough turn around for a dinged up team, but I also think we should see the Rams struggle with the short week too. Los Angeles just went all out to take down the Bills in a home upset on Sunday, which required a lot of energy and game planning. This is a massive game in the NFC West for both of these teams to keep their postseason hopes alive, and the quick turnaround should favor the Niners.
Excluding meaningless games in the final week of the regular season, the 49ers had won nine regular season games in a row over the Rams prior to this season. But back in September, the Rams broke that streak with an improbable fourth quarter comeback. With their season on the line, the 49ers now get a nice revenge spot at home with their season on the line. It’s a good fade spot of the Rams after they pulled out all the tricks to defeat the Bills, and now they have limited time for preparation for a team that’s dominated them in recent years.
I backed the Niners on Sunday over the Bears, and will continue to buy low on Thursday.
