The Milwaukee Bucks have already punched their ticket to Las Vegas for the Emirates NBA Cup semifinals on Saturday after a thrilling victory over the Orlando Magic on Tuesday. Tonight, the New York Knicks and Atlanta Hawks will try to do the same.
After a slow start to the season, the Knicks have started to find their form and have had the third-highest net rating in basketball over the last 10 games, winning seven of them to climb to 15-9 and fourth in the Eastern Conference. New York’s offense starts with point guard Jalen Brunson, who has dropped an efficient 25.2 points and 7.8 assists per game so far this season.

Atlanta has never been an elite defensive team with Trae Young on the roster, and even pairing Young in the backcourt with a pair of defensive stoppers in Dejounte Murray and, now, Dyson Daniels, hasn’t helped. The Hawks are allowing 119.8 points per game, the third-highest rate in the league, despite the tactics of Quin Snyder, known as a defensive ace during his stint in Utah. The fact that Atlanta’s weakest defensive link is Young makes this a dream matchup for Brunson.
Brunson has been on a shooting tear as of late, making more than half of his shots in seven of the last eight games and more than 40% from three-point range in six, and that should continue tonight against a Hawks team that is allowing opponents to hit shots at a 47.1% clip. Atlanta concedes the eighth-most assists per game of any team in basketball, and with Brunson’s co-stars rounding into form as well, expect the point guard to drop plenty of dimes tonight.

The one place where the Hawks do excel is at forcing turnovers, thanks to The Great Barrier Thief.
Acquired in the offseason for Dejounte Murray, Daniels has been one of the biggest surprises of the season and is an early Most Improved Player contender. He is averaging a whopping 6.5 deflections per game, far and away the best number in the league, and he also has an NBA-best 3.2 steals per game. Meanwhile, Brunson has coughed up the ball three or more times in four of his last five games.
