Brown has yet to play this season after injuring his shoulder during preseason, but Chiefs’ HC Andy Reid told the media Wednesday that Brown is “getting close” and that Brown “says he feels great.” The receiver still needs to be cleared for contact, but Brown feels likely to return in Week 16 or 17, which are the fantasy semifinals and finals, respectively, for most season long leagues.
While Brown has yet to make his Chiefs debut, with Cardinals last season, he led the team with a 24.9% target share and scored at least 14 FPTS in six of his 14 games. The Chiefs signed Brown to a one-year deal worth up to $11 million this off season with hopes of him being a top-three receiving option for this Kansas City offense. Brown absolutely could be a factor for this team during the postseason.
However, Brown seeing enough usage in the next three weeks to be a fantasy relevant asset during the fantasy football playoffs is difficult to envision. The wideout almost certainly will play limited snaps in his first few games, as he gets back into shape and accumulated with this Chiefs’ offense. Furthermore, Kansas City uses a very balanced attack and there are many mouths to feed in this offense. Outside of Travis Kelce, predicting who is going to see strong usage for the Chiefs is a tough task every week, Expecting Brown to see enough volume to produce solid fantasy numbers right out of the gate is unreasonable.
Take Deandre Hopkins for example. In his first four games with Chiefs after being dealt to the team earlier this season, Hopkins only scored double-digit FPTS once and he saw five or less targets in three of those four games.
While it doesn’t hurt to stash Brown on your bench if you have an open roster spot, it is highly unlikely that you ever start him during the fantasy playoffs, unless you are playing in a very large league.
