The University of North Carolina is handing Bill Belichick the keys to its football program. After being ousted by New England and spurned in last year’s coaching cycle, the legendary coach is taking his talents to the collegiate game to be the head man for the Tar Heels. The move comes as the 72-year-old is 15 victories shy of passing the late Don Shula to become the winningest coach in NFL history.
Belichick inherits a program stuck in neutral. UNC finished the regular season 6-6 and went 3-5 in ACC play. The school ranked 35th in scoring offense but just 89th in scoring defense. Superstar tailback Omarian Hampton, who was second in the nation in rushing yards, will likely turn pro in April, leaving the roster gutted of any blue-chip prospects.
The eight-time Super Bowl champion will try to apply his old-school, no-nonsense approach to a landscape that often draws comparisons to the Wild West due to the increasingly lax rules on NIL and the transfer portal. This doesn’t mean Belichick will be in many living rooms across America, as coaches like Deion Sanders have been successful and opted not to go to “in-home” visits. Belichick will instead likely use his aura and ample hardware to promise kids a winning culture, made easier by a 12-team College Football Playoff.
