The 2024 NBA Cup is down to the final eight teams, and with the defending champions eliminated, the stage is set for a new titleholder to emerge. As the quarterfinals approach, the stakes couldn’t be higher.
The first two games of the quarterfinals are set to begin on Tuesday. The Orlando Magic and Milwaukee Bucks will face-off, followed by the Dallas Mavericks taking on the Oklahoma City Thunder.

The Magic enter the knockout rounds with momentum despite losing Franz Wagner to an indefinite injury. Wagner had been carrying the team in the absence of Paolo Banchero, but Orlando will need to rely on their defense and depth to challenge the top-seeded Bucks. Milwaukee, led by Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard, remains undefeated and has been a force throughout the Cup. Khris Middleton’s return further strengthens the Bucks’ already potent roster. Orlando’s best chance lies in containing Milwaukee’s three-point shooting and limiting their fast breaks, which could be key in slowing down their high-powered offense.
Atlanta Hawks (3-1) vs. New York Knicks (4-0)

Location: Madison Square Garden (New York City, NY)
The Hawks have quietly impressed throughout the Cup, with solid wins over Boston and Cleveland securing their spot in the knockout rounds. Atlanta’s defense, led by the emergence of young players like Jalen Johnson and Dyson Daniels, will face its toughest test yet against New York’s high-powered offense. Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns have been excellent for the Knicks, who have the best offense in the Cup. New York also boasts a much-improved defense, so Atlanta must find a way to outscore the Knicks while limiting their shooters.
Dallas Mavericks (3-1) vs. Oklahoma City Thunder (3-1)
Date: Tuesday, December 10, 9:30 p.m. ET
Location: Paycom Center (Oklahoma City, OK)
The Mavericks have been on a tear, winning seven straight and 11 of their last 12 games, making them one of the hottest teams in the NBA. Luka Doncic’s return has been a significant boost, and Dallas’ rebounding advantage was a key factor in their earlier victory over the Thunder this season. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander naturally sets the tone offensively, but Oklahoma City must capitalize on free throw opportunities and force turnovers. The Thunder are ranked first in forcing turnovers, but despite the team’s recent momentum, they must find a way to pick apart Dallas in the half-court defensively. The Mavericks have various key players on the injury report, with P.J. Washington (illness) and Naji Marshall (illness) both questionable. However, Marshall appears to be trending toward returning to the lineup. The team will be without Maxi Kleber (illness), Jaden Hardy (ankle sprain) and Dante Exum (wrist surgery). It’ll hurt their odds if the Mavs have to play without Washington or Marshall.
Golden State Warriors (3-1) vs. Houston Rockets (3-1)

Location: Toyota Center (Houston, TX)
The Rockets have been one of the best defensive teams in the NBA this season, but it shouldn’t be overlooked that Golden State went on the road earlier this season and won in Houston without Stephen Curry. With a superstar like Curry and a defensive anchor of Draymond Green’s caliber, the Warriors naturally have a favorable chance in any single-elimination circumstance. Jonathan Kuminga has been a standout performer for the Warriors, including a career-high 33 points in their last win over Houston. The Rockets’ offense must find its rhythm, as Golden State’s defense has been challenging to break down. The Rockets must also generate more offensive production and look to slow down Golden State’s offense when it gets going.
