Isaac Guerendo ($8,400 for Showdown) destroyed the Bears for 138 scrimmage yards and two touchdowns with Christian McCaffrey (knee) inactive this past Sunday (26.8 FPTS), but Guerendo sprained his foot late in the victory and was unable to return to the game. 49ers’ HC Kyle Shanahan told the media that Guerendo will be evaluated over the next few days ahead of Thursday’s matchup with the Rams, but noted that the back wouldn’t have been able to practice Monday.
Given the short turnaround after playing Sunday, there is a strong chance that the rookie misses at least this game. With McCaffrey done for the season, Taylor Jr. ($7,400) would be the next man up in this San Francisco backfield. After Guerendo exited during the fourth quarter this past Sunday vs. the Bears, Taylor operated as the 49ers’ lead back, with six carries in the final frame, compared to just two for Ke’Shawn Vaughn.
Taylor averages a modest 3.6 YPC this season, but as we have seen time and time again, whoever is the top back in this Shanahan offense will handle a huge role and be a terrific fantasy asset. Jordan Mason produced 15.9 FPTS per game as the 49ers’ starter for the first seven games of the season with McCaffrey sidelined. Then, McCaffrey scored 12.2 FPTS per game in his four starts before getting hurt again, and finally, Guerendo erupted for 26.8 FPTS in his first career start this past week with both McCaffrey and Mason missing.
As both a rusher and receiver, Taylor will be in line for 15-20 touches if Guerendo is out this Thursday, and he should continue to see this type of workload if Gueredno misses any additional games going forward.
Taylor has the potential to be a league-winning pickup if he ends starting these next few weeks during the fantasy football playoffs, and he needs to be pursued aggressively off the waiver wire this week.
