The PGA TOUR teams up with the LPGA Tour this week for the Grant Thornton Invitational, which will be played at the Gold Course at Tiburon Golf Club in Naples, Florida. The course measures a 7,382-yard par 72 with Bermuda grass greens.
This is a very unique event, in that there will be 16 teams of two, each consisting of one PGA TOUR golfer and one LPGA golfer. In addition, there will only be three rounds, with each one consisting of a different scoring format (scramble, alternate shot, four-ball).
Below I have outlined my favorite bet for the week.
Corey Conners/Brooke Henderson to win (+800)
Being that the field is small, we will be going with a single selection this week. The all-Canadian team of Conners and Henderson played this event together last year, and finished runner-up to Jason Day and Lydia Ko, losing by only a single stroke. The duo shot a combined 63 on Sunday, which was third-best in the field, and were one of just seven teams to break 60 in the first round scramble format.
While Tiburon Golf Club is not used on the PGA TOUR circuit, it does hold the CME Group Tour Championship on the LPGA Tour, where Henderson has finished T8, 12th and T7 over the past three years.
Conners will also be coming in red-hot, having posted three top-10 finishes across his previous six starts, including the last time we saw him, which was at the Procore Championship in September. He gained 7.53 strokes ball-striking that week, and it appears his game is in a very good place right now.
It will be no easy task to beat the Tony Finau/Nelly Korda pairing, but I do believe chemistry matters at this event, and the fact that Conners and Henderson will be playing together for the second straight year only helps improve their chances. At +800, which is nearly double the price of the favorites, Team Canada (Conners/Henderson) makes for a really strong bet this week in such a diminutive field.
