Cade Otton went through a stretch where I was backing him earlier in the season, sometimes due to matchup, but mostly because Tampa had simply run out of pass-catchers. Now the Bucs have some receiving help back, and Otton has returned to a more reduced role. While Otton hasn’t topped 35 yards in any of his last three games, he’s still been getting targets, including seven just last week against Carolina. While Otton only hauled in two of those targets for receptions, this week matchup presents a much more manageable task.
While the Chiefs have been the team to target against at the TE position all season, and I still may look at that angle on Sunday night, the Raiders are now right behind them. Vegas is giving up just under 67 yards per game to opposing tight ends, which ranks 31st in the NFL. The Raiders gave up 68 yards to Travis Kelce on Black Friday (not to mention another 58 to Noah Gray), and 90 to Kelce when these teams met at the end of October. In between those games, Denver was the only team that wasn’t able to get much tight end production against Vegas. However, Miami and Cincinnati both had tight ends go for 100 or more yards in Jonnu Smith and Mike Gesicki.
Mike Evans is dinged up but did practice on Friday, so while he’s good to go, he’s not at 100 percent. This is a good spot and matchup to get back to feeding Otton, who we saw total 258 yards over a three game span earlier in the season. He’s perfectly capable of handling the workload, and we should see it in this matchup.
