The Minnesota Timberwolves have had a good week. On Monday, they took down the Los Angeles Lakers, 109-80, then nearly replicated that performance on Wednesday against the Clippers, beating the other half of LA 108-80. The truest test of Minnesota’s newfound form will come tonight in San Francisco, as the 13-8 Golden State Warriors welcome the Timberwolves to Chase Center.
If the 2024 playoffs marked shooting guard Anthony Edwards’ coronation as a true number one option, this season has solidified that status. With center Karl-Anthony Towns traded to the New York Knicks in the offseason, Edwards has shined, averaging 26.2 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game. He’s also become one of the NBA’s premier three-point shooters, shooting 42.3% from deep on 10.6 attempts per game, the third-highest rate in the league.

It might appear as if Edwards is in a bit of a slump, given the fact that his streak of 19 consecutive games of scoring 20 or more points came to an end on December 2 with an eight-point performance against the Lakers. He then followed it up by scoring just 16 against the Clippers two days later. These two relatively modest performances dropped his season average from 27.7 to 26.2 points per game.
Don’t be fooled; Edwards is as elite a scorer as ever. Those two games were Minnesota’s largest margins of victory so far this season, and marked two of the three times Ant has logged less than 30 minutes of playing time. Unless Stephen Curry sits — he missed Golden State’s win over the Houston Rockets on Thursday night with injury management — this game should be competitive and Edwards should play at least 35 minutes.
Sure, the Warriors are a tough matchup, owning the league’s fourth-best defensive rating. Golden State does not allow a lot of shots at the rim, where Edwards’ athleticism gives him an advantage, and they also allow the fourth-lowest percentage in the league on such shots. But the Warriors also foul a lot and gives up a lot of threes, tendencies that should play right into Edwards’ strengths and allow him to rack up points. Edwards averaged 25.3 points in three games against Golden State last season.
