Week 14 Picks
Picks Record: 36-29 (55.3%)
Jaguars +3.5 at Titans- The Jaguars will be without Trevor Lawrence, but they should still be able to compete against a divisional opponent. Jacksonville has been plagued by its defensive issues all year, ranking dead last in the league in defensive EPA/play. However, they have been playing better defense as of late. Excluding the Lions game where things got out of hand, Jacksonville is 22nd in defensive EPA/play since Week 7. The Jaguars have played a tough schedule over that stretch with a good win over the Patriots, the blowout loss to the Lions but then losses of five points or less to the Packers, Eagles, Vikings and Texans.
Mac Jones played really well in relief for Lawrence last week against the Texans. He has had enough run to competently command this Jaguars’ offense, which ranks 12th in EPA/rush. Meanwhile, Will Levis is still dealing with major turnover issues. The Titans’ offense ranks 30th in EPA/play and does not have the firepower to exploit the issues in the Jacksonville defense. The Titans are 2-10 ATS this season, the worst ATS record in the NFL, and the Jaguars should cover here.
Browns +6.5 at Steelers- AFC North divisional games are the toughest games of any division. Underdogs own these matchups, going 50-31 (62%) ATS since 2018. The Browns will be on short rest for this game after playing on Monday Night Football, but Kevin Stefanski has thrived on short rest. He is almost always able to get his team ready to play despite the disadvantage, with a record of 8-3 ATS on short rest in his career. Mike Tomlin is the greatest underdog coach of all time but struggles as a big favorite. Since 2017, as a favorite of four points or more, Tomlin is 10-25 (28.6%) ATS, the worst mark in the NFL over that stretch.
Almost every trend points to this being a tight divisional game, not to mention the fact that the Browns already beat the Steelers this season. Of course, that was at home in snowy conditions, but the Browns had a great game plan. If Jameis Winston can avoid mistakes that have plagued him for a lot of this season, the Browns should be able to move the ball up and down the field with relative ease. They put up a ridiculous 552 yards against one of the league’s best defenses last week in Denver but the mistakes cost them the game. Only three of the Steelers’ nine wins have come by multiple scores this season and this should be another tight one against the Browns.
Jets +6.5 at Dolphins- The Jets have had a disastrous season after entering 2024 with such high expectations. They sit at 3-9 heading into this game and even a miracle run would likely not get them into the playoffs at this point. Meanwhile, the Dolphins have also had a very disappointing season as they sit at 5-7 heading into this game after also having playoff aspirations entering the year. The Dolphins still have a chance at a playoff spot but this game is largely for bragging rights between division rivals.
The Jets have found a lot of different ways to lose football games this season. However, for the most part, their games have been very close. Of their nine losses, six of them have been by six points or less. The Jets have been overvalued on the market for most of the season because of their talent on paper, but they are finally being downgraded and this could be the chance to catch them as big underdogs against a non-elite team. This game could be ugly, but the Jets should get a few stops and be able to move the ball a bit. They might lose the game, but they should keep it inside this number.
Rams +3.5 vs. Bills- The Rams are fighting for their lives in the wild NFC West race. Meanwhile, the Bills are on top of the world after beating the Chiefs and 49ers in back-to-back games. This is likely the Bills’ betting peak since the entire public wants to back them. The Bills have also not been the same team on the road as they are at home. Both of their losses have come on the road this season and Josh Allen’s stats are not the same. Allen has a 14-2 TD-INT ratio with an average of 8.0 yards per attempt at home. On the road, his TD-INT ratio is just 6-3 and he is averaging only 7.0 yards per attempt.
The Bills’ defense has also been significantly worse on the road. They are giving up 4.71 yards/play at home compared to 6.03 yards per play on the road. Overall, the Bills are 18th in defensive dropback success rate. Stafford should be able to hit all of his weapons in this game to keep the Rams’ offense on the field and Josh Allen off the field, keeping Los Angeles within the number.
Falcons +4.5 at Vikings- The Vikings have played close games all season. Since Week 4, they have only won one game by multiple scores and that was a 10-point win over the lowly Titans, which was a tight game almost the whole way. In recent weeks, they beat the Cardinals by one, the Bears by three in overtime and the Mac Jones-led Jaguars by five. Meanwhile, the Falcons have been the same story but have been on the wrong end of some of those tight games. Atlanta has lost three straight, but two have been one-score games.
It seems destined for this to be a really tight game between two teams who don’t know how to play any other way. The Falcons were the much better team last week against the Chargers, but Kirk Cousins had major turnover issues. The Falcons’ offense ranks 13th in EPA/play, better than the Vikings who rank 15th. The Vikings do have an elite defense, but the Falcons are a tough team to defend with all of the weapons they possess. Sam Darnold is just 4-8-1 ATS in his career as a favorite of three points or more, so Cousins should get the cover in his revenge game.
