With J.K. Dobbins (knee) missing his first game of the season this past Sunday vs. the Falcons, Gus Edwards got the start at running back for the Chargers. Unfortunately, the veteran failed to make an impact, rushing seven times for 32 yards and catching his lone target for one yard (4.3 FPTS). Edwards logged a season-high 52.2% of the snaps, but he only saw two more carries than Kimani Vidal. Overall, the Chargers only ran the ball 36.9% of the time in this win, which is well under their 46.7% rush rate for the season.
Seeing Los Angeles rely on its passing game more with Dobbins sidelined wasn’t surprising, as Edwards has been very ineffective as a rusher this season. The veteran is averaging a modest 3.4 YPC, which ranks 51st out of the 57 running backs who have seen at least 50 carries this season. Plus, Edwards has been a complete non-factor as a receiver, with only three targets to his name this season.
With Dobbins on IR and out for at least three more games, the Chargers should continue to be a pass-first offense this Sunday vs. the Chiefs, especially with Los Angeles being a four-point underdog for the contest on DraftKings Sportsbook. Furthermore, it wouldn’t be shocking at all if Vidal ends up seeing more touches than Edwards, given the latter’s struggles.
Kansas City is giving up the second-fewest yards per rush this season (3.7) and Edwards is not a viable starter for any format this week.
