To say that this season for the New York Jets hasn’t gone quite to plan would be an understatement. After entering the season with Super Bowl aspirations, the Jets have limped to a 3-9 start and are virtually eliminated from playoff contention.
Running back Breece Hall ($7,000 Play-Action) hasn’t been immune to the team’s struggles in an up-and-down 2024 campaign. In the first 12 games of the season, the third-year pro has amassed 692 yards on 164 carries for a career-low 4.2 yards per carry. He has also recorded six fumbles, the most of any running back this year.
The only thing consistent about Hall this year has been his inconsistency. He has had one brilliant performance, an 18-carry, 113-yard effort against the Buffalo Bills on October 14. But, to counteract it, he has recorded one true stinker, when he needed 10 carries to rack up just four yards in an ugly 10-9 loss to the Denver Broncos on September 29. He has stabilized somewhat in the last five games, averaging close to five yards per carry in each of them, although he has struggled to find the end zone, recording only four touchdowns this season.
Still, Hall brings high fantasy upside in the closing stretch of the season, thanks to his dual-threat ability. He has received at least three aerial targets in every game except for the Jets’ most recent loss to the Seattle Seahawks on December 1. Hall has made the most of his opportunities in the passing game, converting those targets into 46 catches and 401 yards, the third-most of any running back this season behind the Saints’ Alvin Kamara and Miami’s De’Von Achane. He became the only player in the NFL this season to record both a 100-yard rushing and 100-yard receiving game when he hauled in six passes for 103 yards in a 37-15 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on October 20.
He’ll have a relatively favorable matchup on Sunday against the Miami Dolphins, who pair an average rushing defense with a relatively stout secondary that could incentivize Jets interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich to keep the ball on the ground. Then, the following week, he’ll face a Jacksonville Jaguars unit that doesn’t force many turnovers and has allowed opposing rushers to amass 1,598 yards, the tenth-most in the NFL. With two kind matchups on the docket and quarterback questions in New York, Hall has enough upside to make him worthy of RB1 status going into the fantasy football playoffs.
