In two weeks, Golden State Warriors point guard Stephen Curry might be able to add another gem to his sterling resume: an Emirates NBA Cup title. The Warriors have already advanced out of West Group C and will take on Nikola Jokić and the Denver Nuggets at 10 p.m. ET in the Mile High City. Denver, sitting at 1-2 in the group, will need a win, a Dallas Mavericks loss, and a lot of help to have any chance of advancing.
Golden State has been one of the surprises of the season, sitting at 12-7 and in fourth place in the crowded Western Conference, one year after falling in the opening game of the Play-In Tournament. Curry has been as efficient as ever, dropping 22.5 points per game on 43.4% from distance and continuing to be one of the most dynamic offensive threats in basketball.

During its 2022-23 NBA title run, Denver paired an elite offense with a defense that allowed 112.5 points per game, the tenth-fewest in the league. Then, the Nuggets let shooting guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope walk in free agency and point guard Jamal Murray, who was never an elite defender, is suffering through arguably his worst season since his rookie year. Now, Denver concedes 116.4 points per game, the NBA’s seventh-worst mark.
No player should be more poised to benefit than the Chef, who will come to Ball Arena ready to cook. Although Curry hasn’t had the opportunity to put up gaudy stats this season — his 28.9% usage rate is his lowest since 2014-15 — I like his odds to enjoy a vintage performance against a porous Nuggets defense that allows opponents to record 29.6 assists per game, the second-most of any team. I expect Curry to pad both his point and assist totals in any minutes he plays against Denver’s second unit, which has been outscored by a higher margin than any other bench in the league.
The Nuggets won’t make it easy for Steph; amid a frustrating season, head coach Michael Malone will make sure his team is ready to go in a must-win game for Denver. It’s too bad for Malone and Jokić that they’ll be facing the 2023-24 Clutch Player of the Year, who lives for big moments.
