Steelers country, let’s ride?
When the Denver Broncos unceremoniously dumped quarterback Russell Wilson ($5,900 Play-Action) in March just two years into a five-year, $245 million mega-deal, the 2014 Super Bowl champion’s days as an effective passer appeared to be numbered. That the nine-time Pro Bowler has experienced somewhat of a career renaissance since controversially being installed as Pittsburgh’s starter on October 20 has been somewhat of a surprise.
Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has never experienced a losing season in his 18-year career on the sidelines in Pittsburgh, and that streak has been extended at least one more season, as the team sits atop the AFC North at 9-3. The Steelers are 5-1 in Wilson’s starts, and he has completed 65.8% of his passes for 1,626 yards, throwing 10 touchdown passes to only three interceptions. Most recently, Wilson out-dueled Cincinnati Bengals signal-caller Joe Burrow in a thrilling 44-38 win on Sunday.
Although Wilson is no longer the dual-threat quarterback he once was — he has attempted just 20 rushes for 27 yards and one touchdown this year — he still provides high upside going into the fantasy football playoffs. It’s unrealistic to expect that Wilson will throw for 414 yards every game like he did against the Bengals, but he is trending upwards regardless. He was inconsistent in his first four games after taking over the first-string role from Justin Fields, but his last two games have been the best of his season.
Wilson will face a relatively favorable matchup next week against an average Cleveland Browns defense that is susceptible to getting beaten over the top. Cleveland gives up an average of eight yards per attempt, the third-highest rate in the league. The Browns also do not force a lot of turnovers, ranking third-to-last with just four interceptions all season.
Wilson’s wide receiver corps, headlined by number one target George Pickens, is stacked with big-play ability, making him a strong option against Cleveland.
