NBA Value Pick: Start Trey Murphy III if Brandon Ingram cannot play vs. Hawks

It has been a season to forget for the New Orleans Pelicans so far, but it might be about to get a little better. Forward Brandon Ingram has missed each of the last four games with calf soreness, but the Pelicans have listed him as questionable for tonight’s game against the Atlanta Hawks. New Orleans has lost eight games in a row and sits dead last in the Western Conference at 4-17.

In general, the fantasy ceiling for the Pelicans is low with so much roster uncertainty, but forward Trey Murphy III ($6,200) has been solid so far this season and could represent a good value play on Monday.

With a bevy of injured teams on tonight’s four-game slate, there aren’t a lot of great options for DFS players. Murphy, who has just the 28th highest salary and should see an increased role with Ingram and forward Herbert Jones potentially both missing, represents excellent value for players hoping to spend elsewhere.

Since Murphy returned from a right hamstring strain on November 11, his shot has fallen inconsistently, and he is coming off a rough three-for-14 outing in a blowout loss to the New York Knicks on Sunday. However, he was solid on November 25 in a narrow loss to the Indiana Pacers, putting up 24 points on nine-for-19 shooting in the first game of Ingram’s current injury layoff.

Murphy should have an opportunity to get back on track against the Hawks, whose high-paced offense and porous defense has allowed opponents to put up 119.4 points per game, the third-highest rate in the league. Atlanta’s two starting forwards, Jalen Johnson and rookie Zaccharie Risacher, are roughly league-average defenders, so fantasy players can expect Murphy to play more or less in line with his season averages: 17.8 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 2.0 assists.
