Marvin Mims Jr. ($2,800)
After getting relegated to being a special teams ace, Marvin Mims Jr. is finally starting to carve out a role in Denver’s offense. The 63rd pick in the 2023 NFL Draft has struggled to establish himself as a starting receiver. Mims Jr. has had some success getting behind safeties and reeling in home run balls deep downfield. His speed on the perimeter is desirable, but his footwork in running routes and generating separation has not been up to snuff.
Sean Payton has started to figure out how to use Mims Jr. as a dynamic weapon and get him the ball in space. He’s receiving a few targets per game and some designed runs. This uptick in touches is encouraging, as Denver lacks a distinguished second option.
He’s scored at least seven fantasy points in three games in a row, but given his increased opportunity, he has the potential for greater production. Cleveland’s defense has been struggling all season, and if Denver can continue to maximize possessions, Mims Jr. is in a position to be a prime budget play dice roll.
Jordan Akins ($2,400)
Are there better values than backup tight ends? Jordan Akins spent the first five years of his career in Houston, primarily as a blocker. He has physical traits that teams desire at the position but has yet to break out as a pass catcher. With Jameis Winston under center, the aerial attack has shown signs of life. Low bar? Sure, but it’s helped make Akins DFS relevant.
The 32-year-old has at least four targets in four of his last five games, doing work up the seam and the middle of the field. Akins has such a large frame that he should be better utilized in the red zone and vie for his second score of the season. At this assigned salary, Akins’ recent attention is enough to warrant serious consideration.
