Denver Broncos -6 (-110)
Six points are nothing to sneeze at. The line respects the Broncos. It doesn’t buy the Browns. It’s right. The Browns are 3-8. They won a snow game at home in prime time. They barely won. They tried to throw it away like they always do. Cleveland hit a couple of key plays and the Steelers missed. The Browns will need a lot of luck to compete against a top-5 defense on the road. They’ll need the luck earlier and often. Otherwise, they’ll fall behind and put their defense in their usual vulnerable position. If luck is the strategy, then hit the roulette tables.
The Broncos might have the best defense in football. Their 50.3 Expected Points Contributed is the second-best in the NFL. They allow 16.8 points per game (second-best) and the fewest at home (14.8). Can Jameis Winston handle this defense? Will his Cinderella receiving corps continue to punch above their weight? Is Nick Chubb fully healthy? Can the Browns’ below-average offensive line support the offensive attack? All of the answers are no. The spread is big but there is a big difference between these teams.
Bo Nix Passing Yards Over 219.5 (-120)
Every Cleveland Browns game prediction starts with an obligatory Myles Garrett reference. Now that that’s out of the way the focus is Nix. Garrett will get his one to two sacks and ruin a drive or two or three. The rest of the game belongs to Nix. Only rookie Caleb Williams has been blitzed more than Nix. Defensive coordinators have tried to pick on the young quarterback. It’s not working. Nix has only faced pressure at a rate of 18.5%. That’s top 10 in safety. That is despite a lengthy 2.5-second pocket time โ the fifth longest. When the pressure does come, he runs. His 35 scrambles are the fourth most. All of this means more opportunities through the air.
The rookie develops every week. Nix has thrown for 215 yards or more in five of the last six games. The one miss was a 33-10 blowout win at New Orleans. He’s topped 270 in back-to-back games. The kid is fearless. He sits in the pocket. He extends plays with his legs. And he fires downfield. His 3,035 Intended Air Yards are the fourth most in the NFL. Cleveland has a top-10 defense when they’re not stuck on the field all game. Denver has a top-5 defense, period. Cleveland’s D will likely be working OT in the mile-high stadium. Nix will eclipse his passing prop in a fix.
