The Philadelphia 76ers have had a nightmarish start to the season, dealing with injuries to each of their top three players and limping to a 3-13 record. Their schedule will not get any easier on Wednesday night, when they welcome the surging Houston Rockets to the Wells Fargo Center for a 7 p.m. ET matchup. Sitting at 13-6, the young Rockets have been one of the surprises of the NBA season so far.
One of the lone bright spots this season for Philadelphia has been point guard Tyrese Maxey, who has continued his 2023-24 Most Improved Player campaign by dropping 24.4 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 3.8 assists.

The Rockets’ strong start to the season has been buoyed by their stifling defense, which has allowed just 103.8 points per 100 possessions, the second-best rate in basketball. In particular, Houston is adept at preventing three-point attempts, ceding only 34.5 tries from beyond the arc per contest, the fourth-fewest in the league. Expect athletic guards Jalen Green and Amen Thompson to be hounding Maxey and his backcourt partner, rookie sensation Jared McCain.
Maxey has been suffering through a season-long shooting slump and has not hit four threes in any contest since going 6-for-14 from deep in a loss in Phoenix on November 4. His minutes have also dipped slightly since his return from a right hamstring strain on November 20. With wing Paul George and center Joel Embiid both on the Philadelphia sideline Wednesday night, the Rockets will likely focus all their defensive attention on slowing down Maxey and McCain.
