After a successful UFC 309 PPV in New York City at Madison Square Garden, the promotion heads to Macau, China. Two former champions headline this Fight Night, No. 3 Petr Yan vs. No. 5 Deiveson Figueiredo. The co-main event features a top-10 women’s strawweight bout between No. 2 Yan Xiaonan and No. 10 Tabatha Ricci. This is the fourth time the UFC is hosting an event in Macau and the first time since August 2014.
Deus da Guerra is Figueiredo’s nickname, meaning God of War in English. When he steps into the UFC Octagon, he is exactly that. Figueiredo is a two-time UFC Flyweight Champion and finished his career at 125 pounds with four title wins.
He was part of one of the best rivalries in the sport against Brandon Moreno. After losing his title to Moreno at UFC 283, Figueiredo decided to fight at 135 pounds. Figueiredo seemed drained nearly every fight when competing at flyweight, but he has looked much stronger and healthier at bantamweight.
One of the hardest things to do in the sport of MMA is to succeed in multiple weight divisions. That establishes a unique level of greatness in an athlete. Figueiredo has done just that. He is a flawless 3-0 since moving up to bantamweight 11 months ago. What Figueiredo is doing is highly impressive, especially for a fighter nearing his 37th birthday in December.
Figueiredo most recently defeated Marlon “Chito” Vera in August by unanimous decision. But now he finds himself in a matchup against former bantamweight champion Petr “No Mercy” Yan. Yan began his UFC career 7-0 with four knockouts and was on top of the world after beating Jose Aldo for the title at UFC 251. But things in this sport change quickly. Since that big victory, Yan is 2-4 in the promotion and has looked very beatable lately.
Yan is returning after his most impressive win since winning the title, beating Song Yadong at UFC 299 in March. After that fight, Yan needed surgery to repair a torn ACL. This matchup is an unbelievable bout between two former champions. Even though both fighters have captured gold in their career, both athletes need this win. Yan is No. 3 in the rankings, while Figueiredo is No. 5. This contest has significant stakes, and the winner of this main event could very likely fight for a title in 2025.
Yan Xiaonan recently lost to Zhang Weili at UFC 300 in April. Before that, she won two fights in a row against Mackenzie Dern and Jessica Andrade. At 35, Xiaonan needs a win to make another run at a title shot. She faces Ricci, who has won six of her last seven fights. She previously beat Angela Hill by unanimous decision in August.
On this main card, No. 8 Volkan Oezdemir will fight rising star No. 10 Carlos Ulberg in a fantastic light-heavyweight fight. Earlier in his career, Oezdemir fought Daniel Cormier for the title but is trying to work his way back to the top of the division. He is on a two-fight win streak while finishing his last two opponents in the first round.
But now Oezdemir is up against one of the most impressive and fascinating prospects at 205 pounds. Ulberg is the latest fighter from City Kickboxing in Auckland, New Zealand, to have achieved success in the UFC. Ulberg is on a six-fight win streak with five finishes and has only since the third round twice in that period. He is a powerful and accurate striker who is a matchup nightmare for Oezdemir. The winner of this bout will put themselves in a great position to fight for gold soon.
Three fights will occur on the Prelims for the Road to UFC Season 3 finals. The winners of each fight will be rewarded with a UFC contract. Baergeng Jieleyisi vs. SuYoung You is the bantamweight final and the featured prelim on the card. DongHun Choi takes on Kiru Sahota in the flyweight final, while Shi Ming fights Feng Xiaocan in a women’s strawweight bout.
