Daniel Jones Released: Top Three Landing Spots for the Former Giants QB

The Daniel Jones era has finally ended for the New York Giants.

The writing has been on the wall for the former sixth overall pick for quite some time, but the New York Giants have finally pulled the plug and released Jones. Whether the competition at scout team safety was too strong or the relationship had soured beyond repair is uncertain, but the Giants will eat over $20 million in dead money as Jones searces to find another team. This seemed to be a decision that both sides agreed was best.

Across his 69 career starts, Jones holds a QB record of 24-44-1. He has thrown for 70 touchdowns, 47 interceptions, and fumbled the ball 50 times. It will be interesting to see how many teams around the league view Jones as a reclamation project with an upside or if the 69-game sample size as a starter will be enough to put him on the pathway of being a backup quarterback for the rest of his NFL career.

New York has set their sights on getting the best draft outlook possible, and Jones will test the market to find out this answer for himself. As he begins to look for a new team, here are five teams that should consider taking a chance on Daniel Jones.

Top Three Daniel Jones Landing Spots

3. Philadelphia Eagles

The Philadelphia Eagles have Super Bowl aspirations and Jalen Hurts is the clear-cut franchise quarterback. However, there is still some uncertainty beyond him on the depth chart. Kenny Pickett is the backup quarterback with Tanner McKee holding things down for the third string.

Pickett had his ups and downs in the preseason and proved not good enough as a starter during his tenure with the Steelers. Jones adds more with his legs compared to Pickett, which holds some appeal when factoring in an ideal backup for Jalen Hurts. Howie Roseman seems to take pleasure in taking talent from the NFC East foes and adding Daniel Jones to the same roster as Saquon Barkley would hold plenty of irony. If Jones does not get a chance to start anywhere, don’t be surprised if opts to stay on the East Coast and grab a stable backup job with the Eagles as he seeks to rebuild his value.

2. Miami Dolphins

It was shocking how much of a lull the Miami Dolphins offense hit when Tua Tagovailoa was injured this year. Miami had the worst scoring offense in the NFL over this four-game stretch, tallying just 40 total points during this time. They were unable to eclipse 179 yards of total offense in any of these games.

While Tyler Huntley and Skylar Thompson each were given a chance during Tagovailoa’s absence, neither proved to be good enough. Huntley also finds himself on IR due to a shoulder injury. Daniel Jones has shown more at the NFL level than either and should be looked at as an upgrade at the backup quarterback spot. The unfortunate reality with Tagovailoa as your quarterback is you must always be prepared for him to need to be shut down. Jones would improve the Dolphins’ outlook compared to their current options and this is a fit that makes some sense for both sides.

1. Dallas Cowboys

This season looks to already be off the rails for the Dallas Cowboys. They sit at just 3-7 on the season with Dak Prescott already out for the season due to a hamstring injury. In his absence, it has been Cooper Rush taking the snaps at starting quarterback despite the fact the organization traded a fourth-round pick for former third-overall pick Trey Lance just a little over a year ago. Rush has not looked like an adequate answer at QB and has thrown for 566 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions in his two starts.

While Jones has his issues, there are more reasons to believe in him than the Cowboys’ current quarterback options. If the former Duke product wants his quickest path to having a chance to start games, his former rival may be Jones’ best chance. Jerry Jones is not afraid to make a splash and Dallas fans should be looking for any sign of life to cling onto for the remainder of the season. The Cowboys are also set to face off with the Giants on Thanksgiving which would add an extra layer of entertainment to things. While it feels like an improbable pairing, but one that may make more sense for both sides than either could expect.
