Russell Wilson has led the Steelers to four straight wins since taking over as starting quarterback, which has the Steelers atop the AFC North at 8-2. There were a lot of skeptics when Justin Fields was benched in favor of Wilson. Fields was playing solid and off to a 4-2 start to the season. However, it looks like Mike Tomlin made the right move because the Steelers have kept winning.
The Steelers’ defense is one of the best in the NFL. They are 2nd in the league in scoring defense and 7th in EPA/play. They just need solid and consistent play on the offensive side of the ball to win games. Justin Fields was actually providing that offense, but the element Russell Wilson has added is the explosive passing game.
When you are playing tight, lower-scoring games like Pittsburgh has, you need to hit one or two explosive passes per game while your opponent doesn’t. Wilson has done exactly that to both George Pickens and Calvin Austin, who are both in the top 18 in the league in yards per catch. The Steelers’ defense limits explosive plays as well as almost anyone in the league. If their offense can generate a couple of those explosive passes that lead to touchdowns, they will win a lot of games.
This Browns defense is not as dominant as it has been in years past. They rank 16th in the NFL in defensive EPA/play and have allowed 36 passes of 20+ yards, the fourth-most in the NFL. They have also allowed the fifth-most passes of 40+ yards. The Steelers have been able to generate big plays in the passing game with Wilson and that should continue here. Wilson should be able to hit a couple of deep shots to Pickens and Austin, pushing him over his passing yards prop for this game, which sits at 176.5 yards. Wilson has thrown for at least 195 yards in all four starts this season and is averaging 235.5 passing yards per game so he should be able to clear this number against Cleveland.
