This is the PGA’s last official tournament of 2024. The event will be played on Sea Island off the coast of South Carolina and due to the fading daylight and a full 156-player field, two courses will be used to host players on Thursday and Friday.
That’s an important note for Pick6 lineups as the Plantation Course and the Seaside Course on Sea Island do have a lot of different features. Both have relatively easy-to-hit greens and fairways, but the host Seaside Course skirts the ocean on many holes, while the Plantation Course is more inland and less open thanks to some vegetation surrounding the course.
The Plantation Course also plays as a par 72 and features four gettable par 5s, which will leave the players with more better birdie chances. Neither of these courses are very difficult and last season the players set new scoring records on the Par 70 Seaside Course. Still, it’s good to be mindful of which course your player is starting on for Round 1 as the variations in holes and layouts mean it will be easier in some regards for players to hit birdie totals on the Plantation Course.
With that in mind, let’s get to this week’s picks.
Matt Kuchar More Than 4.5 Birdies or Better
As mentioned above, I’m attacking these smaller birdie totals for players who are starting their event on the Plantation Course on Thursday. Even if the courses play relatively similar this season (in scoring), the fact there are four par 5s should make birdies as a whole easier to come by.
Kuchar not only starts his week on the Plantation Course in Round 1, but he’s also getting the job done in terms of his recent birdie rate. He’s 12th in Birdie or Better % over the last 24 rounds and 13th in birdies made.
With an early tee time, if the wind does rise on Day 1, he’ll also be somewhat protected from the worst of the conditions. I don’t see any reason not to be bullish on him exceeding his birdie total for Round 1 with him starting on the Par 72.
Lucas Glover More Than 4.5 Birdies or Better
Glover is another veteran who brings in solid form and has a first-round date with the Plantation Course on Thursday. The American ranks third in opportunities gained over the last 24 rounds and has already posted some big finishes this fall, clocking a T-3 at both Black Desert and the Sanderson Farms in October.
Even though he finished horribly last week in Bermuda with a 77, Glover still managed to clear this 4.5 birdie mark in each of his first three rounds. Much like Kuchar, I just see this total as potentially being too low with him both playing well and having the advantage of starting on the par 72, which features several short par 4s and four par 5s.
Seamus Power More Than 4.5 Birdies or Better
I’ll round out my Plantation trio of plays with another More Than, this time on Seamus Power, who like Glover and Kuchar, starts his event on the Plantation Course this Thursday.
Power is just a great seaside player, having already grabbed a win at the comparable Bermuda Championships a couple of seasons ago. The Irishman has also played extremely well at this venue in recent seasons, posting T-4 and T-5 finishes at Sea Island in 2022 and 2023, respectively. He comes in off a productive fall, where he ‘s finished T-23 or better in four of his last five starts and closed off his event last week with a round of 65, which included four birdies and an eagle.
It wouldn’t be overly shocking to see him ride some of that momentum to a big start this Thursday.
Matt Wallace More than 67.5 strokes
If you want a little more variety or a slightly contrarian pick, then looking to fade Englishman Matt Wallace, who starts his event over on the Par 70 Seaside venue, does make some sense.
He played over in Dubai last week on the DP World Tour, and while he has played well this fall, he’s also endured a lot of travel the last couple of weeks and certainly could be in a position to struggle out of the gates this week as a result. The wind is also likely to hit 10 MPH or worse on Thursday and with Wallace having a later tee time on a very open course, he’s likely to be affected by the weather more than most players.
As good as he’s played of late, his last two starts at this event also read with results of MC-T67, and he’s shot under par on the Seaside Course just once over his last five competitive rounds there.
